Geff Crawford
Geff grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and moved
to the Gold Country in 1974. He had been playing banjo and guitar for a few
years, and took up the fiddle in 1975, inspired by visits to the California
Old-Time Fiddlers' jam sessions in Sacramento. He taught Kindergarten
and first grade for 32 years, actually getting
paid for playing music just about every day at work.
He's now retired... a gentleman of leisure,
and I guess that also makes him a full-time professional
old-time fiddler! (and there's not many of those!)
Geff lived in Hadlow, England (County of Kent) for a
year in the mid-1980s on a teacher exchange. He played frequently at the
Tonbridge Folk Club, and made many trips to London to the
Singers' Club, a pub gathering hosted by the late Ewan MacColl and Peggy
Seeger, where he was asked to fill in as co-host
while Ewan and Peggy were away. He met and played with Tom Paley, a founding
member of the New Lost City Ramblers, while in
London, and they had the pleasure to reconnect in 2006 (and 2008!), when Tom visited for
a while and played a house concert hosted by Geff and Masha.
Geff started going to Lark In The Morning Music camp in the 1980s, and every
year since 1995, Geff has attended the
Festival Of American Fiddle
Tunes in Port Townsend, Washington, a weeklong series of workshops,
concerts, dances, and jam sessions. Master fiddle players in myriad styles are
invited from all over North America to help preserve and pass on their traditional
music. And besides that, it's a week of all-out fun!
Geff and Tom Sharkey, a master of DADGAD guitar (among other things), performed
for some years as the Blarney Brothers, playing reels, jigs, hornpipes, and singing
pub drinking songs to just about anyone who'd listen. Now Geff performs with Masha as
the duo "Old Soles", and as the lead possum in
"Orange Possum Special".
Geff teaches fiddle, and also enjoys performing sleight of hand magic, and with over
30 years of experience as a teacher, Geff is in demand for school
programs. He does assemblies, and also really enjoys visiting individual classrooms and doing
a series of small musical performances.
